Case Study: Custom Silicone Protective Case for Verifone POS Terminal

1.Client Background
Verifone is a global leading brand in payment solutions, providing secure and reliable POS terminals to retailers, hospitality businesses, and service providers worldwide. Their devices are widely used in high-frequency daily transaction environments, where durability, protection, and user experience are critical.

To improve product protection and extend device lifespan, Verifone's brand partners are seeking professional silicone manufacturers to develop customized protective case solutions for various POS terminals.

2. Challenges:
Customers face the following challenges when using protective case solutions:

After 3-5 years of use, the protective case exhibits poor aging resistance, severe surface wear, and an unsightly appearance.
The POS machine's feel and grip are compromised with a protective case.
The protective cases are not enough to prevent the risk of the device breaking due to drops.
The fit between the protective case and the POS machine's buttons, ports, and screen area is not ideal.
Protective cases not only need to meet local environmental standards, but also need to meet environmental certifications in other countries when expanding into overseas markets.

3.WJM’s Solution
Based on Verifone’s application requirements, WJM provided a complete customized silicone protection solution:

Selected Platinum-Grade Silicone Material, and used anti-aging test and button usage count detection standard.
Reinforced corner and edge structure for enhanced drop protection, and also equipped with PET protective film and tempered glass protective film.
A finishing process involves spraying a tactile oil onto the silicone protective case, and optimized surface texture for better grip and comfortable hand-feel.
Using the machine casing provided by the customer, we performed reverse engineering to obtain accurate 3D data and created 3D drawings. Through simulated assembly of the protective case and the POS terminal, and multiple rounds of communication with the customer, the optimal hole positions for the silicone sleeve on the POS machine were determined. 3D prototyping was conducted to confirm that the structural design of the silicone protective sleeve would not affect the daily use of the POS machine before the steel mold was opened.
WJM's solid silicone has received multiple SGS certifications, including BPA, which meets US certification requirements, as well as RoHS and REACH EU certifications. It also holds material certifications for BPA, EN71-3, PAHs, and TSCA.
We sign exclusive agency and mold information confidentiality agreements to provide private mold design services to our clients. WJM Company has a clear internal regulation that silicone sleeves produced by this mold can only be ordered and sold by this client. And customized color and logo to match Verifone brand identity.

4.Implementation
During the development stage, WJM engineering team worked closely with Verifone’s project team:

After receiving the POS machine from the customer, we will conduct reverse engineering to obtain accurate 3D drawings, and then perform Design for Manufacturing (DFM) analysis and provide structural optimization suggestions.
Delivered first prototypes within 15 days development cycle. After 3-5 rounds of sample appearance, design, and functional testing by the production and engineering departments and the customer, a sample that satisfies the customer's needs is produced.
After passing quality inspection, performing drop tests, aging tests, and assembly verification, the first prototypes is confirmed with the client again.
Returned the silicone protective case sample and the device to the customer for actual use, and awaited feedback on the product's performance.

The silicone protective case has been widely adopted in multiple Verifone POS terminal models, also subsequently developed generic molds for popular styles of other brands and models, providing retail channels.
